My friend @mybrotherthinksiminsane said Kakyoin’s should have come back wearing heart-shaped sunglasses and I support it wholeheartedly. And being the nice kid he is, Kakyoin would have brought silly sunglasses for the bunch (and DIO would join the trend too ‘cause he can’t stand not being the center of attention)
Tbh I kind of roll my eyes every time I see a post about Jotaro Kujo being bad at English and needing Kakyoin’s help with translation. Like, the kid was raised by an English mom. Why not the other way around? Show me Noriaki Kakyoin five seconds away from tearing his hair out because he needs to communicate something in English and he’s stuck with Jotaro “two-word sentence” Kujo as his translator.
The rooftops of Cairo stretch out in front of Jotaro like glittering emeralds, every lit window a tiny defiance against the night. Jotaro’s pulse is stuttering in his throat, the curse of his bloodline hammering to be let out. At this distance, Dio is nothing but a gold silhouette against the Cairo skyline, and even Star Platinum’s eyes can barely pick him out.
“What’s happening?” Polnareff asks.
Kakyoin’s Hierophant Green is stretched out rooftop to rooftop, and then it is not.
Star Platinum’s eyes catch the trajectory of a body as it goes flying through the air, and then the battlefield is still. Elsewhere in the city, a water tower begins to spill mingled water and blood onto the rooftops. Jotaro’s tongue is heavy in his mouth. Star Platinum doesn’t see any movement other than Dio and Joseph.
“This way,” he says, and Polnareff guns their motorcycle.
.
In another world, in another time, Jotaro turns right, chasing the path of his grandfather, loss held on his tongue like a coin. What worth is company to the dying? What is it worth, to offer a few kind words to a corpse, when there are so many still living?
In this world, Jotaro turns left. His stand takes him across the rooftops, past neon signs and late-hung laundry, to the place where Kakyoin is choking out his last labored breaths. His body is so light when Star Platinum retrieves him from the water tower; large pieces of him are missing. His head hangs brokenly from his neck. His lungs make wet, bubbling noises as he gasps for breath. Jotaro scrabbles for words, but his mouth is all full of horror.
“Help Joseph,” Kakyoin says, and dies.
In another world, he dies alone. In that world, Jotaro is the sort of person to write off a death as inevitable, the kind to turn his wheels towards the people he can still save. In that world, Jotaro’s heart is a bulwark, a fortification held fast against all the ravages of time, a walled garden where no one ever goes.
In this world, Jotaro holds Kakyoin’s body and feels something in him snap. Kakyoin’s never looked so delicate. He’s never been so still. Jotaro’s heart refuses. Jotaro holds Kakyoin’s corpse in his arms and thinks of the floor of his mother’s house and the way Kakyoin looked lying there, and wishes they’d never met.
In another world, Jotaro’s stand is the same as Dio’s, his heart a closed door with nothing but anger behind it. In this world, Jotaro’s heart is only a teenager’s, and his stand is his own and no one else’s. Star Platinum’s fists push at the world, shuddering with all the grief and fear and fury a heart can hold-
In Part 6 Araki explains Jotaro’s “timestop” is actually an effect of Star Platinum’s superspeed. As Star Platinum approaches the speed of light, the world around him slows and stops *relative to* Jotaro and his Stand.
This makes Jotaro’s timestop different than DIO’s – Jotaro power is relative/speed-related while DIO is directly stopping the flow of time through brute force. Two entirely different powers produce the same effect.
Jotaro’s bullet-catching scene at the start of Stardust Crusaders suggests that Jotaro’s timestop doesn’t just come out of nowhere but has been there all along. Although Jotaro doesn’t recognize it yet, his Stand’s got the ability to manipulate time from the start: Star Platinum catches that bullet as if it stopped in mid-air.
fwiw, also love that Jotaro and DIO both have the type of personality that thinks shooting a gun at themselves is a good way to test out their Stands.
I’ve been painting all these since April I believe and I’ve gone through so fucking much that I can’t believe the collection is done! I’m so happy!!! I made a huge effort believe me ugh!
