An entirely different way of showing affection. Again with the role reversal, in the situation of finding Shinji and forcing open the emergency hatch (more on that later).
As a reminder, In Neon Genesis Evangelion, Asuka had expected Misato to punish Shinji for his arbitrary actions. In 3.33, after Shinji’s world-threatening actions, which where arbitrary to say the least, Asuka gets to face him as she would… but she still saved him from the entry plug all the same.
